Flying With Cannabis: Official Rules for Canadians (Demo)

With legalization across Canada now in full swing, there are many changes that benefit cannabis users – besides being able to purchase and smoke cannabis legally. One of these new benefits is changes to airline regulations to include recreational cannabis alongside medical marijuana.

The new regulations, per The Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) allow marijuana on both carry-on and checked baggage per the rules below:

  • Medical Marijuana: Medical documentation is required if the individual is carrying an amount that is greater than the recreational legal limit for cannabis. The documentation, and the amount of cannabis being carried, must be in accordance with the Access to Cannabis for Medical Purposes Regulations.
  • Recreational Cannabis: A legal amount of recreational cannabis is permitted (30g or less). Any cannabis oils are subject to standard liquid restrictions – 100 ml (3.4 oz.) is the maximum amount permitted in carry-on luggage.

If the amounts are greater than the legal limit allows, and medical documentation is not in order, the transport authority has next steps to contact the police, which could result in charges, so if you are flying with cannabis do ensure that the amounts do not exceed what is allowed.

In addition to allowing cannabis on planes, you are now allowed to smoke medical marijuana at most airports in the designated smoking areas. Do be aware that not all tobacco smoking areas are open to cannabis users at this time, so pay attention to signage. The airports do not allow any smoking or vaping within the indoor lounges.

While these guidelines do not relate to international flights, they do make flying within Canada much easier (and less stressful) for a lot of individuals!
